why are we wearing mouth tape to sleep?

why do I love mouth taping?
my love for mouth tape began a couple of years ago when I read I could improve my sleep, calm my nervous system and define my facial features at the same time? of course my purchase was immediate! but as I do with all wellness hacks I deep dove into it and quickly discovered the real magic of mouth taping; nasal breathing. here is what I discovered…
have you ever woken up with a dry mouth, puffy face, or the feeling that you didn’t sleep well at all? of course you have, and for me this was an every day reality that I just thought was the norm.
mouth taping has gained a lot of popularity in the wellness space over the last couple of years, and its an incredible wellness hack to transform sleep quality and improve our general health.
our bodies are designed to breathe through the nose—especially at night, it's only over time that we've all become chronic mouth breathers. the nose isn’t just a secondary option to breathe air; it plays a key role in filtering, humidifying, and warming the air we breathe. it also helps regulate breathing patterns and oxygen uptake through the production of nitric oxide which is such a powerful molecule. I've learnt so much about over the last year or so about how important nitric oxide is, I'll go more into detail about this magic molecule on another blog post :)
when we breathe through the mouth instead of our nose, especially during sleep, it can lead to a host of problems—from snoring to disrupted sleep cycles.
mouth taping is the gentle practice of placing a piece of a tape (mouth tape!) over your lips before bed to encourage nasal breathing while you sleep. the goal isn’t to restrict breathing—it’s to nudge your body into using the nose, your body’s natural air filter. here are just some of the incredible benefits of mouth taping whilst you sleep...
hormonal balance + deeper sleep
quality sleep regulates cortisol, estrogen, and progesterone. when your sleep is disrupted by mouth breathing, your entire hormonal system can go off balance. mouth taping can help you stay in deep, restorative sleep, essential for mood, metabolism, and cycle regulation
wake up more hydrated
mouth breathing leads to evaporation of water, drying out your mouth and throat. keeping your mouth closed + nasal breathing whilst sleeping will improve saliva production and stop you from waking up in the night or in the morning feeling dry and desperate for a drink
wake with that glow
nasal breathing reduces overnight dehydration and inflammation, which can help to prevent dry skin and puffy eyes, support overnight cellular skin repair + promote a radiant, rested glow in the morning
reduce anxiety and promote deep relaxation
nasal breathing stimulates the vagus nerve + activates your parasympathetic nervous system, reducing stress and anxiety by calming your nervous system. if you’re prone to nighttime overthinking or light sleep, mouth taping may help you settle into stillness more quickly
increase nitric oxide production
a powerful molecule involved in vascular and respiratory health. I go more into detail about the magic molecule of ours on my nitric oxide blog post
jaw relief + reduce tension in the head + body
women are more likely to experience TMJ issues and teeth grinding (especially during stress). keeping the mouth gently closed can reduce clenching and relax facial muscles overnight
filter the air you breathe
your nose is your bodies very own filter system, your tiny nasal hairs can trap dust, pollen and debris right at the entrance of the nose to avoid allergies, the mucus lining of the nose captures smaller particles like bacteria, viruses and fine dust, and then our cilia (tiny hair-like structures) are constantly move mucus and trapped particles toward the throat to be swallowed or expelled, helping prevent lung infections
improve facial posture + jaw line
mouth taping will prevent chronic mouth breathing which promotes the tongue up position (tongue resting on the roof of the mouth) which is a key element to facial and jaw development. mouth breathing uses the neck and facial muscles abnormally, nasal breathing reduces the strain in the facial and neck muscles and will promote proper muscle tone in face and jaw
supports immune and respiratory function
your nose will filter out pathogens and viruses, humidifies + warms the air into your lungs to prevent irritation + dryness that can lead to infections, plus your sinuses produce nitric oxide (NO), which has antiviral, antibacterial, and antifungal properties. you do not get this benefit with mouth breathing
better breath + oral health
hormonal shifts can increase your risk of gum issues and dry mouth. nasal breathing helps maintain saliva flow, which naturally protects teeth and gums and fights bad breath.
pregnancy sleep support (with medical guidance)
during pregnancy, nasal congestion and snoring can worsen. if cleared by your doctor, gentle mouth taping may help improve oxygen intake, reduce snoring, and support better rest for both mom and baby.
is mouth taping safe for everyone?
mouth taping is generally safe for healthy adults, but it’s not for everyone. please avoid it if you have:
- chronic nasal congestion
- obstructive sleep apnea
- respiratory issues
always use skin-safe, medical-grade tape (like our collagen + vitamin infused mouth tape) and never tape your nose. if unsure, talk to your healthcare provider.
in a world full of complicated wellness trends and different self-care hacks taking over each week, sometimes the simplest solutions are the most powerful.
mouth taping isn’t just about better sleep—it’s about supporting your energy, hormones, beauty, and emotional balance. for many women, it’s a small nightly ritual that leads to big changes. however the problem we seem to have faced is most mouth tapes available on the market leave a sticky residue on our faces in the morning, if only we could find a mouth tape that nourished and moisturised the lips whilst we benefit from nasal breathing? that's where we come in...
consider adding our collagen + vitamin infused mouth tape to your skincare routine to benefit from all the magic of nasal breathing + more —you just might wake up feeling like the best version of you.
